I have been "coo coo for coconut" for quite some time now. Whether it’s coconut oil, coconut butter, shredded coconut, coconut water, or coconut milk, I am coco obsessed. It seems like coconut oil has been the be all and end all the past few years. I find a way to put my coconut oil to good use every single day! Here are 4 of my favorite ways to incorporate coconut oil in my daily routine.
Coconut oil is known for its moisturizing traits. It contains a unique combination of fatty acids that are able to penetrate the skin more effectively than other oils. For me, using the oil as a moisturizing treatment is most effective when I exfoliate beforehand. I exfoliate my body while I shower with my exfoliating gloves, turn off the shower, and while I am still wet, I rub the coconut oil all over. Once I’m lathered, I then pat dry my entire body. Be sure to not rub. I then put my robe on and let the oil just soak into my skin. I swear by this method!! I try and to do this treatment once or twice a week, allowing my skin to soak up all the naturally wonderful things this super oil has to offer!
Try applying coconut oil to your lips before bed too. I am a fever blister sufferer and always moisturize my lips before bed. I used to use Vaseline, but now that I have coconut oil, I use it instead :)
Not only does coconut oil work miracles for your skin, it can also have the same effect on your hair. Keep in mind that coconut oil IS AN OIL and it will in fact make your hair oily (weird right?)! Anyway… I like to add a little coconut oil to the ends of my hair after I use my conditioner. Applying oil to the ends can help prevent breakage, which in turn helps hair growth. I then rinse my ends so my hair doesn’t appear oily when it dries.
Coconut oil can also be used as a deep conditioning treatment. With this method, you want to first melt the oil and massage it all over your head. I like to really rub it into my scalp (this process can be beneficial for dandruff sufferers as well). Throw an old t-shirt, towel or shower cap on top of your head, allowing your hair to soak in all the oil. You can either let it sit for a few hours or leave it in overnight. BE SURE to wash the oil out in the morning. Your hair will feel rehydrated and rejuvenated after this easy overnight treatment.
3. MAKE-UP REMOVER
Using coconut oil as make-up remover is probably my favorite technique I use. Although my mascara isn’t water proof, I still have black smudges under my eyes after I wash my face with soap and water. To get the excess eyeliner and mascara off my eyes I simply wipe my cotton ball on the solidified coconut oil and rub it on my eyelids and voila! I am makeup free!
4. CANINE BENEFITS
Of course I had to somehow tie my fur baby Wrigley into this post. Wrigley, like me, is a coconut oil feen! Probably more so than anyone else in my family, and yes they can all vouch for me on this. Wrigley sits outside my shower and waits for me to be done so he can have a spoon full of coconut oil. If you didn’t already know, coconut oil works wonders for a dog’s digestive system. It helps their digestion and can be used as a medicine for digestive upsets. According to Wrigley, it tastes good too.
Like humans, dog’s skin can benefit from coconut oil use. I like to mix it with my doggy shampoo. Studies show that, “Coconut oil may provide an effective defense against many troublesome parasites including giardia. Like bacteria and fungi, giardia can’t stand up against MCFA found in coconut oil.”
Coconut oil really is all it’s said to be, and affordable to. I have been able to save a significant amount of money not having to buy hydrating lotion, make-up remover, oil for my hair, and dog meds because I have this miracle oil. One 16oz jar of Nature's Way Organic Extra-Virgin Coconut Oil is sold around $10 and will last for months!
I hope I have encouraged you to go out and buy a jar of coconut oil… and if you already were a coconut oil consumer, I hope I have shown you a new way to utilize this special oil!!
